UNITED WORKERS UNION
PROJECT INFORMATION
Project Overview
TRUE Fitout & Construction partnered with United Workers Union to deliver a complete 1,500sqm workplace transformation across two levels in Adelaide. The project involved a full office fitout, including a new lobby and atrium upgrade, custom staircase, amenities, landscaping and external gate works — all designed to create a more connected, welcoming and modern workplace environment.
Located in Mile End, the project reimagined a previously enclosed and heavily built workspace into an open, light-filled environment that better reflected the organisation’s people-focused culture.
THE BRIEF
The client’s vision centred around creating a workplace that felt open, collaborative and connected to its surroundings. Existing areas within the building were dark and heavily segmented, with outdated storage systems and limited natural light throughout the space.
Working closely with the client team, TRUE delivered a design and construction solution that focused on:
- Opening the central atrium by removing existing slabs
- Introducing a striking custom joinery staircase to improve connectivity between floors
- Enhancing natural light penetration throughout the workspace
- Creating a welcoming reception and arrival experience
- Delivering modern staff amenities and upgraded shared spaces
- Strengthening the connection between the interior environment and surrounding landscape elements
This resulted in a workplace that felt warm, contemporary and highly functional for both staff and visitors.
THE CHALLENGES
The project was delivered during the height of COVID-related restrictions, presenting significant challenges across design coordination, procurement and site management.
To maintain momentum and programme certainty, TRUE engaged a fully local design consultant and contractor network, enabling faster decision-making, improved collaboration and streamlined delivery throughout the project lifecycle.
Construction was also undertaken within a live environment, with four ground-floor tenants remaining fully operational during the works. This required careful staging, extensive communication and flexible programming to minimise disruption. Noisy works were coordinated outside standard operating hours, including weekends and after-hours periods, ensuring day-to-day tenant operations could continue uninterrupted.
THE TRUE SOLUTION
TRUE approached the project with a highly collaborative and agile mindset, adapting quickly to evolving project conditions and external restrictions.
Through proactive communication, strong stakeholder management and close collaboration with local authorities, consultants and suppliers, the team successfully maintained programme outcomes while delivering a high-quality workplace environment aligned with the client’s vision.
The completed UWU Adelaide workplace is a reflection of TRUE’s ability to deliver complex fitout projects that balance design intent, operational functionality and seamless project execution — even under challenging conditions.
